Fraudulent Lightning Damage Claims Revealed

After conducting several internal audits in 2010, Zap Consulting reports that companies discovered they had been subjected to fraudulent claims, having paid for damaged electronic items by simply relying on these general weather reports to determine the cause of damage.

For more information on homeowner's insurance coverage of lightning damage.

These audits showed a host of individuals attributed non-weather related damage to electronics to be caused by lightning from the last storm that passed through the area. According to the report, the storm date is commonly reported as the actual date of loss for the damaged property, even when items are in good working order. With over 20 million cloud-to-ground strikes in the U.S. per year, it is not unlikely to discover that a lightning strike has occurred somewhere in the proximity of the loss location during a given storm, giving further credence to these dubious claims. The audits went on to point out that direct impact from lightning to a structure does not necessarily guarantee that damage to electronics occurred.

Zap consulting also reported that the number of lightning claims and correlating claim value fell by 25% from 2008 to 2009. On the flip side though the audits showed that insured losses (or more accurately, claims) continue to climb, with the average cost per claim up 39% over the past five years. Losses related to damage from lightning strikes topped more than $1 billion in the U.S. for the first time in 2008.

I am the the Owner of Technical Restoration Services located in South Florida. We have been in business her for 22+ years. We provide consulting and restoration services for Property Insurance Carriers and have handled thousands of lightning claims. I can tell you that about 1/3 of the claimed lightning strikes claimed are not valid. The first step is to check the weather by using http://www.wunderground for a free history of the weather in the area for the claimed date of loss. Be careful using this because it generally gives the weather for the closest airport which in many circumstances can be miles away from the loss site. An onsite inspection is critical in making a determination as to signs of lightning. For example where was the equipment located at the time of the loss? Was there any other electrical items located on the same circuit? Generally, if there was lightning there are multipible items damaged. We find in commercial losses that a lot of times where there is lightning damage, over-voltage comes into the equipment or electrical systems through the back or grounding side. Alarm Systems for example can be damaged by over-voltage entering through the field devices and being transferred through the communication cable into the main circuit panel. A Vasila StrikeNet report which uses satellite technology to give exact location and time of lightning strikes. This report costs $95.00. Just as you stated this does not necessarily mean that lightning damaged the items. We have had cases where the weather did show lightning and after an investigation using the Manufacturer Serial Number found the equipment had former pre-loss electrical damage.
The bottom line is perform a thorough investigation. With experience common sense will guide you through this determination process.
