Background:

Aflac was founded in Columbus, GA in November 1955 by three brothers, John, Paul, and Bill Amos. Initially, the company had 6,426 policyholders and $388,000 in assets.

In 1958 Aflac introduced one of the world's first cancer expense policies. Since the 1980s Aflac has expanded with new products such as accident/disability, short-term disability, hospital intensive care, hospital confinement indemnity, long-term care, life, and dental.

Aflac: Market Innovator

Mindful of the many challenges small-business owners face in a down-economy, the insurer has lowered the minimum worksite size requirement for short-term disability policies to just three full-time workers from five. Additionally, in early 2010 Aflac introduced voluntary insurance policies to help serve as a benefits solution for employers of all sizes and industries at no direct cost to their business.

Aflac positioned its voluntary dental coverage ahead of the upcoming 2011 open-enrollment season as a hassle-free offering. The new plan avoids having to negotiate deductibles, copayments and provider networks, or conduct annual premium reviews. The carrier is marketing the product to businesses as a way to help them attract and retain talent as flexibility with Aflac is always key. This dental product allows policyholders to choose any dentist they want, thus employers and brokers are freed from having to negotiate networks with the insurance provider.

As an added bonus, Aflac pays a benefit for any qualifying treatment without deductibles, while policy rates do not increase based on usage or group demographics. Aflac cites research by the National Association of Dental Plans showing that about 62% of employers viewed dental coverage as essential to their benefits package in 2009 versus just 53% in 2005.
